I recently read these two books by Justin Halpern. While 'Sh*t My Dad Says' is his first book I read 'I Suck at Girls' first as the title caught my attention from iBooks store. I downloaded the sample first to decide if it was going to be worth reading. It only took me the first couple of pages to make my decision. Upon finishing reading the book I could not resist reading his first book. Both books are going to be a great and easy read if you want something entertaining but also want to feel like you've learned something(maybe about life?). They are both about the author's personal life and what his father had to say about his life.

Honestly, it was his dad which made the book so interesting to me. The author's dad has a good sense of humor. He could sound intimidating as he uses "fuck" and "shit" a lot in his words, but if you listen to him say it every day and once you get so used to it I guess it can sound nothing more than any other filler words. Despite of this bad habit, which I know he wouldn't give a shit about what I think about him, he is a well educated man with integrity and a warm caring heart who can give his son wise advices about life.

When the author broke up with his girl friend and when she called back to say she wanted to talk to him when he got over with her and asked his dad what he should do, his dad said...

Human beings do dumb shit. You do dumb shit. She does dumb shit. Everyone does dumb shit. Then, every once in a while, we have a moment where we don't do dumb shit, and then we throw a goddamned parade and we forget all the dumb shit we did. So what I'm saying to you is, don't do something, or not do something, to punish someone because you think they did something dumb. Do what you want to do, because it's what you want to do.

Also, when the author faked the results of his experiment he was doing for the science fair, this is what his dad said as a scientist(to be accurate a doctor).

You shamed the entire scientific community. Fucking Einstein, everybody.

And then he made his son confess to his teacher and apologize to his classmates for attempting on cheating.

When the author's brother was struggling on getting a job and had problems dating with women be cause his self esteem was low, his father had arranged a blind date for his brother. But his brother's self esteem was so low that the date didn't go well and complained about how the girl his father arranged for him was out of his league. Then this is what his father said.

Out of your league?! What fucking league are you talking about?! You are a man, she is a fucking woman! That is all that matters, goddamn it!

And in many other stories, the author shows how his dad taught him to love others and treat them well.

The author's father seemed like a good role model for parenting. The way he handles his sone might seem a bit cruel sometimes, but mostly it seemed reasonable. And not only I value his values but I also have to respect the man for teaching his son about his values by setting himself as an example.

Anyway, the dad is hilarious but I think you have a lot to learn from him. If you are still a teenager or in the mid twenties, you have a lot to learn from his advices for his son. If you are a parent, you have something to learn from the way he raised his kids.

I really enjoyed the books.
